Chinese Orchestral Concert marks 20th anniversary of Atlanta-Taipei friendship The Taipei Chinese Classical Orchestra will give a performance at Symphony Hall, Robert W. Woodruff Arts Center on Sunday, February 7 to mark the 20th anniversary of the Sister-City relationship between Atlanta and Taipei, Taiwan. The performance is part of a goodwill mission by Taipei City Council, which has been coordinated by the Georgia Chinese American Chamber of Commerce, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta and the Atlanta-Taipei Sister City Committee. Taipei Municipal Chinese Classical Orchestra, founded in 1979, is the first professional Chinese Classical Orchestra in the Republic of China. The Orchestras Director, Dr. Ching-ping Wong, is a leading soloist of the Chine lute known as the pipa. Dr. Wong has performed in many countries, throughout Asia, Europe and the Americas and in 1996, he was granted the National Arts Award, the most honorable award of his country. The program includes The Aspiration of Buddha, The Deep Forest, A Hundred Birds Playing Tribute to the Phoenix, Floral Umbrellas & Orchids and the famous Butterfly Lovers. Atlantas friendship with the City of Taipei dates back to November 1979 when a Sister City Memorandum was signed by Mayor Maynard Jackson and Mayor Teng-Hui Lee, who is now the President of the Republic of China.
