UPS grants $125,000 to Atlanta Sister City Commission to support 2001 international convention.

ATLANTA:  The Atlanta Sister Cities Commission (ASCC) received a check for $62,500 from The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of the United Parcel Service (NYSE: UPS). The payment represents half of the total of $125,000 that was committed to support ASCC in hosting a major international convention in Atlanta in July, 2001.

ASCC bid successfully to bring the Sister Cities International convention to Atlanta, in July, 2001. The event will attract 2000 delegates representing over 40 countries to discuss the global relationship network of the sister cities movement. The presence of the highly prestigious convention will reinforce Atlanta’s image as an international city and broadcast a positive message to the world via the sister cities network.

“UPS’s generous grant demonstrates the welcoming spirit that delegates will experience when they visit Atlanta next year.” said Georgianne Thomas, ASSC Chair. “We are very grateful to UPS for supporting our efforts to make this a memorable event.”

ASCC needs $300,000 in cash and kind contributions from the Atlanta community in order to provide hospitality to the visiting delegates. The Atlanta Council on International Relations has allocated $10,000 as fundraising seed money, and ASCC is approaching other city organizations for additional support.

Founded in 1951 and based in Atlanta, Ga., The UPS Foundation identifies specific areas where its support will clearly impact social issues.  The Foundation’s major initiatives currently include programs that support family and workplace literacy, prepared and perishable food distribution, and increased nationwide volunteerism.

In 1999, The UPS Foundation distributed more than $35 million throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Corporate grants benefiting organizations or programs such as the Atlanta Sister City Commission positively impact communities.

“UPS delivers much more than 12 million packages each day.  We deliver support to communities worldwide,” said Evern Cooper, executive director of The UPS Foundation.  “The support we provide goes beyond monetary contributions.  We develop long-standing programs to ensure the safety and well-being of our employees and the communities we serve, as well as hands-on community service through programs that reinforce our commitment to education and urgent human welfare needs.  We are delighted that Atlanta Sister City Commission shares our vision of improving our communities.”
