Mission
Statement
To
coordinate city resources with federal, state, local governments and
other key interest groups to develop revitalization strategies in
targeted communities while reducing and or eliminating criminal
activity.
Function
Weed and Seed is a community-based, multi-agency comprehensive strategy
approach to law enforcement, crime prevention, and neighborhood
revitalization. This initiative brings together people and
resources to prevent and control crime. The strategy takes
a
two-pronged approach:
law enforcement agencies and prosecutors Weeding
Out criminal activities and Seeding In human services to the
area encompassing prevention, intervention, treatment and
neighborhood revitalization.
The
oversight is managed by the Atlanta Weed and Seed Steering Committee.
A broad-based partnership of stake-holders who consistently interact
personally and professionally with issues related to the adversities of
poverty and crime in Atlanta's communities. The Steering Committee
is co-chaired by the United States Attorney William Duffey and Mayor
Shirley Franklin. Atlanta Public Schools plays a significant role
as a Steering Committee partner and the lead agency in addressing
educational issues.

the Atlanta strategy
- Develop and evaluate the strategy
- Identify resources needed to meet the
targeted area needs
- Set policies that outline how each
component of the operation will operate
- Plan guidelines and make commitments
to goals and objectives
- Monitor progress and effectiveness of
strategy
- Solicit grants and other funds as may
be available to the city from other entities to support the efforts
in targeted communities
