Mission Statement
To provide for a fair and impartial hearing for all citizens charged with a city ordinance violation or state offense within the boundaries of the City of Atlanta.

Function
To provide legal representation to indigent persons who are charged with crimes in the Atlanta Municipal Court.


 

Office of the City Solicitor
Function
The Office of the City Solicitor represents the interest of the citizens of Atlanta in all cases brought before the Municipal Court by direct prosecution of cases and by providing legal assistance to law enforcement agencies, city agencies and the general public.

Office of the Public Defender
Function

The Office of the Public Defender provides representation to indigent defendants who are tried in the Municipal Court of Atlanta, or who appear before the Court for commitment purposes. The Office is also charged with the task of prosecuting appeals or certiorari petitions (in city ordinance violations only) to the Superior Court of Fulton County or other Georgia appellate courts having original jurisdiction.

Pretrial Services
Function

The function of Pretrial Services is to assist in the City's effort to assure the safety of the community by providing critical support and information to branches of the judicial system.

Pretrial Services performs a wide range of services for Municipal Court, Atlanta City Court, Atlanta Department of Corrections, and a variety of multi-jurisdictional entities. The Office of Atlanta Pretrial Services handles eight daily Municipal Court sessions, weekend/holiday Municipal Court Bond Hearings, and Atlanta City Court Arraignment six days per week. There are four primary programs available through this Office:
  Self-Bond Release - Authorized by a Judge to eligible persons, in court, charged with felony, misdemeanor, traffic, or city ordinance violations
  Recognizance Release - Offered to eligible persons, in jail, charged with certain misdemeanor, traffic, or city ordinance violations
  Time-to-Pay Program - Offered to eligible persons, in court, who have been given a fine by the Judge, but are unable to pay the full amount at the time of sentencing
  Criminal History Research - A profile of criminal history, warrants, parole and probation notices, and arrest patterns, created by researching local, state, and national arrest databases. 
Release - Eligibility for release is based on the type of offense, criminal history, family and community ties, the risk of flight, and community safety.

Victim Witness Assistance Program
Function

The Victim Witness Assistance Program (VWAP) will advocate for the fundamental rights of victims and witnesses of crime with compassion, dignity, and respect. VWAP will provide comprehensive services which remove barriers, strengthen victims and their families and foster a healthy transition from victim to survivor.

Atlanta Community Court
Function
The Atlanta Community Court is a division of the Atlanta Municipal Court that deals with what are commonly known as quality of life crimes, such as prostitution, disorderly conduct, panhandling and low-level drug offenses. The Community Court takes a nontraditional approach to working with offenders, using sentencing alternatives and legal sanctions to promote rehabilitation and address the underlying causes of criminality... for more information go to
