Born the eldest of four children to Sergeant Major Retired Ivory L. His rural Alabama roots serve as a constant reminder that poverty is not a disease that people catch. His mother, a seamstress tailored uniforms for several soldiers including Retired General Colin Powell.

Councilmember Young graduated High School from the public school system of Fairfax County Virginia in 1980. He matriculated to Hampton University in Hampton Virginia. It was there that he pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., participated in the marching band on a band scholarship, and served as Student Government Association President. He graduated from the school of Architecture and Planning in 1986 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. He was also honored as Who’s Who Among American College and University Students, Outstanding Young Men of America and from the School of Architecture and Planning awarded The Alpha Rho Chi Medal for Leadership Service and Merit.

With over seventeen years experience in Architectural, Planning, and Construction Program Management firms Councilman Young has helped to create designs, plans or served as an advocate for establishing over $250 million dollars of development in District Three. He understands that great minds inhabit all of our neighborhoods regardless of the demographics and that all citizens deserve the best public service, economic opportunity, and environmental justice we can offer.

In addition to his professional endeavors he has focused a majority of his career providing community service and activism as an officer in Neighborhood Planning Unit L for six years. He and his wife have invested over $155,000.00 of their own money for childcare in the Inner City of Atlanta since 1992. He is an active member of the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) and former Vice President of the Atlanta Chapter of NOMA from 1989 – 1991. Through his community advocacy he has consistently addressed the needs of communities with a spiritual commitment founded in his belief in God. He now brings the same level of professionalism and spiritual commitment to the citizens of District Three and the City of Atlanta. He passionately desires to serve and represent district 3 and the City of Atlanta by working in partnership with its stakeholders to accurately identify and resolve its concerns through sound ethical and professional practice.
