Helicopters
and Water Sports: Youthfest Celebrates
The Sun was shining. "Whee! Wow! This water is cold, cold, COOL!" squealed a 7 year old. Giggling arms and legs wiggled through arches of praying water. Grinning firemen manned Atlanta Fire Department hoses. And laughing mothers held cuddly towels as giggling bathing beauties sprinted for cover- and the Youthfest was off and running at full speed on July 18, 2003.
Attracting over 3,000 children visiting from Camp Best Friends, private camps, church camps and community residents, this year's District l0 Youthfest brightened Wilson Mill Park. Councilman C.T. Martin played host to thousands of bouncing children, while his capable and loyal staff organized over 150 volunteers to feed, organize and coordinate entertainment for the children and their families.
Entertainment on the main stage was provided by professional as well as amateur youth, presenting performances in dance, song, rap, motivational speaking, and gospel. Rides on trains, a spacewalk, and water sports organized by youthfest volunteers enlivened the day for bouncing youngsters. Public officials, police in helicopters, patrol cars, and mounted on horseback, finger printing experts, and military officers were among the attendees providing outreach to the children.
